Strive for Consistency not Perfection...

In todays blog post we want to touch base on the importance of striving for consistency rather than perfection. Often times when starting a fitness or health program its our reaction to think we have to do a complete 180 with our life and there will be no more eating out, skipping workouts, enjoying fun activities, etc. This couldn’t be farther from the truth and rather than trying to hit the hammer on the nail each time we just need to make sure we stay consistent. Over years a lot of people have referenced the 80/20 rule which is a pretty good example of being consistently good and allowing for some bad mixed in because it is inevitable. Let’s break down examples of why you should strive for consistency!

Fitness

First of all lets touch base on the workout aspect. When someone comes to a personal trainer the main thing we see is wanting to workout everyday which in our opinion won't get you the best results but is also unattainable. The sweet spot of strength training 2-3 times per week with other movement and recovery mixed in allows you to stay more consistent and promotes longevity for you to keep the program going. If we happen to miss a day because something comes up chances are we can make it up the next day and still hit our weekly goal of 2-3 strength sessions per week. Remember Consistent movement each week is key to being healthy!

Nutrition

Next let’s talk bout the nutrition aspect of being consistent. If we cook a majority of our meals at home, from scratch, with ingredients we picked up from there perimeter of the grocery store then you are already doing amazing. In a world so focused on counting calories, macros, etc. just focus on eating a balanced diet of protein, fats, and carbs. Eat colorful and watch your portion controls because if we are eating clean natural foods we will become satiated often times before we consume too many calories. Again it’s about cooking your meals and having some variety as opposed to hitting a caloric goal each day which is a moving target anyway. Do your best to Consistently cook at home!

To summarize this all up the best thing to do when it comes to fitness and nutrition is just do your best to be consistent and not worry if you have a bad day or two. Life sometimes just deals us scenarios where we don’t have the time, a party comes up, a vacation, etc. The more you stay consistent with the habits mentioned above then the easier it will be to dive right back into your routine because the foundation of habits will be set. Just know that life is gonna tempt us, distract us, and other things that may arise from time to time, don’t beat yourself up and just get back to being consistent with your habits.
